I love spatial audio for TV shows and movies, particularly with Apple TV, as it effectively simulates the feeling of sound coming from the action on the big screen. I don’t know if this makes sense—kind of oxymoronic—but it’s like surround sound from a fixed point in your lounge room.

On the other hand, I really dislike spatial audio for music. If a new song is engineered that way, it’s probably cool, but I’ve tried many older tracks that sound much quieter and less emotional and impactful because the music has been de-emphasised in favour of voice. What was once a big sound becomes bitsy, so that you can hear individual instruments.

To me, it seems like music that was once made with feeling (to suit available technology at the time) has been reprogrammed according to fit some algorithmic ideal.
