Feld Notes

Oct 2019

With the announcement of AirPods Pro, I feel like we need to establish some sort of ‘Apple Expenditure Support Group’. I don’t wish to be consumerist and splash cash but the temptation is great.

Ron Guest

I am glad I had to replace my gen 1s a couple weeks ago, otherwise I’d be tempted. TBH, with myself, I don’t really need noise cancelling earbuds either.

Martin Feld

@ronguest Did you find the batteries on your first ones were playing up?

Christopher Wilson

@ronguest I'm assuming my current issues are with the batteries on my gen 1 pods. I've had them since they launched here so perhaps it is to be expected...but I don't like the idea of replacing my headphones every few years. Also I'll add that I really love the fit of Airpods and worry that the rubber tip (which I usually have issues with) would ruin how comfortable they are.

Ron Guest

Yes, it seemed to be the batteries. Even though they would show as fully charged they would die quickly an ungracefully. And the right one held much less of a charge than the left. Couldn’t even make it through a short phone call.

Ron Guest

@ChrisJWilson I have the same sort of feeling about replacement. But TBH, at least for my household, corded ones have to be replaced even more often. Still AirPods aren’t cheap. I will feel a lot more comfortable when AirPod and Apple Watch batteries can remain solidly functional up to 5 years.

Jimmy Baum

@ChrisJWilson My issue with the first generation is the left seems to have battery but cuts out after a few minutes. I did temporarily lose it for a month last year, but it continued working fine until a few weeks ago. Right bud works great still. I usually only have one in so battery doesn't bother me.

Christopher Wilson

@amongthestones I have something kind of similar where one or both will suddenly die unexpectly. Popping them back in the charging case usually revives them though. I have noticed it happens more when I'm outside and there are certain locations where it happens more so I almost wonder if some signal affects them...but it's probably just the battery.

Christopher Wilson

@ronguest That is true, I used to replace my corded pods every 6-9 months I think.

Martin Feld

@ronguest Mine never got that level but yes, the right one lost charge more quickly than the left too!

Martin Feld

@ChrisJWilson Yeah I love the feeling of the normal ones too—totally comfortable.
